Northern Virginia Science Center Reaches Major Milestone Launching Innovation and Technology For All

The highly anticipated Northern Virginia Science Center has officially broken ground, marking a major milestone in the region’s commitment to STEM education and innovation. Community leaders, science enthusiasts and local officials gathered on Monday, March 31, on Knowledge Drive to celebrate the start of construction and thank supporters of the Launch the Future campaign. The Northern Virginia Science Center is set to become a premier hub for STEM education and engagement, providing hundreds of thousands of children in the region with an interactive science center.

Hosted by the Northern Virginia Science Center Foundation, the event brought together supporters and partners who have championed the project for many years, including leaders from the Northern Virginia Science Center Foundation, the Science Museum ofVirginia, Loudoun County, Northwest Federal Credit Union, Kincora, campaign partners and project partners including Balfour Beatty, HGA and Roto.

The ceremony featured remarks from key stakeholders, including elected officials and pivotal project partners, all emphasizing the center’s role in inspiring future generations of innovators and ensuring STEM learning is accessible to all.

“This investment in our community will directly serve over 300,000 children and their families each year from across Northern Virginia and the broader region, inspiring them to become the scientists, engineers and doctors whose imaginations will heal diseases, solve global challenges and propel humanity forward,” said Delegate David Reid, who spoke at the event.

The Northern Virginia Science Center will feature a state-of-the-art facility where curiosity meets discovery, offering immersive learning experiences and interactive programs for guests of all ages. The center will feature dynamic exhibits, cutting-edge technology and collaborative spaces to engage students, educators and families in experiential learning. Once completed, the Science Center is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of guests annually, contributing to the region’s educational and economic growth.

“This Science Center is going to be enjoyed by not just people in the region or just Virginia, but many states are going to enjoy this. This is the only major metropolitan region without a science center. We have a perfect area for it in Kincora, and it will welcome people from Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, but also people from West Virginia and Pennsylvania are all going to come see this science center. It is going to be fantastic,” remarked Phyllis Randall, Loudoun County Board Supervisor.

The Northern Virginia Science Center is scheduled to open in late 2027. As construction progresses, the foundation encourages community members to stay engaged and support the center’s development through donations and partnership opportunities.
